Homemade Vanilla Extract
Make your own homemade vanilla extract with whole vanilla beans and vodka. It is so simple, it is a fraction of the cost of purchasing vanilla from the store, and it has a much richer flavor.
- 5-7 organic vanilla beans grade B
- 8 oz vodka You can also use bourbon or rum. You could alternatively use 4 oz of vodka and cut the vanilla beans down to fit a smaller bottle.
Use a knife to split the beans lengthwise, exposing the seeds without cutting all the way through the split bean hulls. Leave the top of the bean intact.
5-7 organic vanilla beans
Place beans into a glass jar or bottle.
Pour in vodka until beans are fully submerged.
8 oz vodka
Seal tightly and store at room temperature in a cool dark place.
Shake daily during the first week, then weekly.
You can begin using at about 4 months. However, it is ideal to wait until after 6 months as the flavor improves over time. The optimal flavor will emerge closer to 1 year.
