Tallow Lip Balm Recipe

This homemade tallow lip balm recipe combines grass fed tallow, beeswax, and natural oils to create a rich, long-lasting balm. Packed with nourishing fatty acids, it helps protect and hydrate dry, chapped lips.

  • Fill a small pot with a few inches of water and bring it to a gentle simmer over low heat. Once simmering, place a heat-safe glass bowl on top, making sure it does not touch the water. You can also use a double boiler if you have one.
  • Add the grass-fed tallow, beeswax, and coconut oil to your heat-safe bowl or the top of a double boiler. If using a double boiler, simply set the top portion onto the base.
    2 tbsp grass fed tallow, 2 tsp beeswax pellets, 3 tsp castor oil
  • Let everything melt slowly over low heat, stirring occasionally until fully combined and smooth. The beeswax will be the last to melt.
  • Once melted, carefully remove the bowl from heat. Let the mixture cool for a minute or two so it is not extremely hot.
  • Stir in 4 to 8 drops of pure essential oil, if using. Mix well to evenly distribute the scent.

  • Carefully pour the liquid into lip balm tubes, small tins, or other lip balm containers. Work slowly but efficiently to avoid spills as the mixture will begin to set as it cools.
  • Allow the lip balm to cool at room temperature until fully solid. This usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes.Your homemade tallow lip balm is now ready to use.

Notes

  • Adjust the texture with beeswax: Add 1 tsp more beeswax for a firmer lip balm, or keep it as is for a softer, more buttery texture.
  • Use high-quality tallow: Choose well-rendered, purified tallow with a mild scent for the best lip balm.
  • Melt gently: Use low heat and remove the mixture as soon as everything is melted to avoid unnecessarily overheating the oils.
  • Pour quickly: The balm begins to firm up fast, so pour it into your lip balm tubes or tins while it's still warm and completely liquid.
  • Test before pouring: Place a small drop on a cold spoon and let it harden. This lets you check the final consistency and adjust the beeswax if needed.
  • Let it fully set: Allow the lip balm to cool completely at room temperature before using or putting on the lids.
