Pear Arugula Salad (with goat cheese & shallot vinaigrette)

If youโ€™re looking for a fresh salad thatโ€™s full of flavor, color, and texture, this pear arugula salad is it. Itโ€™s one of my favorite homemade salads โ€” especially this time of year when ripe pears are sweet, juicy, and perfectly in season. With its mix of peppery arugula, sweet pears, creamy goat cheese, and crunchy walnuts, this delicious salad is as nourishing as it is beautiful.

Itโ€™s the perfect way to elevate your holiday table, enjoy a refreshing lunch, or serve a healthy side salad at dinner. I made this arugula pear salad recipe again last week, and it reminded me how simple and satisfying it really is.

Ingredients Youโ€™ll Need for This Pear and Arugula Salad

Arugula (Rocket Salad)

This leafy green forms the base of your pear arugula salad. Sometimes called rocket salad, arugula is loaded with antioxidants, chlorophyll, and vitamin K, which supports bone health. Itโ€™s also high in folate and calcium, promoting energy and strong muscles. The peppery flavor balances the sweetness of the pears, creating a light yet deeply flavorful fresh salad. You can also add a handful of baby spinach for even more nutrients and a milder taste.

Pears

Pears are the star of this dish! Their natural sweetness complements the peppery arugula and tangy vinaigrette. You can use Bartlett pears, Anjou pears, Comice pears, Asian pears, or Bosc pearsโ€”each has its own unique flavor and texture.

  • Bartlett pears: Juicy and aromatic, perfect for a softer bite.
  • Anjou pears: Firm and mildly sweet, a good choice if you prefer a sturdier texture.
  • Comice pears: Exceptionally sweet and buttery, great for special occasions.
  • Asian pears: Crisp and refreshing, they add crunch.
  • Bosc pears: Firm with a rich honey-like flavor, ideal for slicing ahead of time.

No matter which variety you use, ripe pears are a great source of fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and flavonoid antioxidants that support digestion and heart health. Their natural compounds may help reduce inflammation and promote glowing skin.

Goat Cheese (or Feta Cheese )

Soft and tangy goat cheese brings a creamy texture that perfectly complements the sweeter ingredients. Itโ€™s rich in calcium, protein, and probiotics that support a healthy gut. Goat cheese also contains A2 casein, which is easier to digest than the A1 protein found in most cowโ€™s milk cheese.
If you prefer, substitute feta cheese or creamy blue cheese for a bolder flavor and added calcium. Each option makes this pear and arugula salad both satisfying and nutrient-dense.

Walnuts

Every delicious salad needs some crunch! Walnuts add a nutty richness and plenty of healthy fats, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to support brain and heart health. They also contain antioxidants and minerals like magnesium and copper that help reduce inflammation and balance mood. Toast them lightly before adding to the salad for even more flavor and a satisfying texture.

Red Onion

Thinly sliced red onions give the salad a sharp, slightly sweet contrast. Onions are packed with antioxidants such as quercetin, which support immune health and have natural anti-inflammatory benefits. Their crisp bite enhances every layer of this arugula pear salad recipe.

Microgreens (Optional)

These tiny greens are nutritional powerhouses โ€” rich in vitamins C, E, and K as well as phytonutrients that protect against oxidative stress. A sprinkle of microgreens also adds vibrant color and freshness to your simple salad.

Shallot Vinaigrette

This quick vinaigrette ties everything together with just the right balance of tangy and sweet
ยฝ tsp Dijon mustard (I use the brand Primal Kitchen)
1 tbsp chopped shallot
1โ€“2 garlic cloves
ยผ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp maple syrup
2 tbsp white wine vinegar (or balsamic vinegar for a deeper flavor)
Juice from ยฝ a lemon (lemon juice)
ยฝ tsp sea salt

How to Make This Pear Arugula Salad

Step 1: Prep your ingredients. Slice your ripe pears and red onions thinly.

Step 2: In a small bowl or blender, combine all vinaigrette ingredients and blend until smooth.

Step 3: In a large bowl, layer the arugula (and baby spinach, if using), sliced pears, onions, walnuts, and cheese.

Step 4: Drizzle your vinaigrette over the top and toss gently. Serve immediately at room temperature for the best flavor.

Tip: If youโ€™re making this ahead, store your components separately in an airtight container and dress the salad just before serving to keep the greens crisp.
