Oven Roasted Asparagus (How To Make Perfect Asparagus Every Time)
If I’m honest, oven roasted asparagus is my favorite go-to dinner side dish. Because as a busy mom of two kiddos, it is easy, healthy, and delicious. Win. win. win! It takes me about 3 minutes to prep and 10-15 mins to cook. However, I had to learn the hard way that asparagus isn’t as straight forward as it seems, and unless you’re paying attention you can very easily end up with stringy or mushy asparagus. So in this blog post I’m going to fill you in on all of the tips and tricks to making crisp and tender oven baked asparagus every time. This recipe is full of flavor, and comes together in minutes using just a few pantry staples like olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Optional add-ins

How to Make Oven Roasted Asparagus
- Preheat your oven to 400°F oven.
- Line a baking sheet or sheet pan with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Or bake on a large stoneware bar pan without parchment. That is what I do.
- Place the asparagus spears directly on the baking sheet in a single layer.
- Drizzle the olive oil over the asparagus and toss right on the pan so you don’t need a separate bowl.
- Sprinkle with salt and pepper and toss again to evenly coat.
- Roast for 10 to 15 minutes depending on the thickness of the asparagus stalks.
Thin asparagus will be ready closer to 10 minutes, while thicker asparagus or thicker stalks may need closer to 15 minutes.
- If you like, you can add any of the option add ins as well, however, I am a purist when it comes to asparagus and truly believe it tastes the best when made simply. It’s amazing how far olive oil, salt and pepper go with this asparagus when its cooked perfectly.
Tips for the Best Oven Roasted Asparagus
Choose firm, bright green asparagus at grocery stores for the best flavor. Both thin asparagus and thicker asparagus work well in this asparagus recipe, but cooking time will vary.
Snap off the woody ends by bending each spear until it naturally breaks. This removes the tough bottom inch and thick ends.
Always arrange asparagus in a single layer on your sheet pan. Overcrowding will cause the asparagus to steam instead of roast.
Use enough olive oil to lightly coat all of the asparagus stalks so they caramelize properly.
Roast at 400°F oven for the best texture with tender centers and slightly crisp edges. I’ve experimented with different oven temperatures and believe 400F gets the best result when it comes to asparagus.
Adjust cook time based on thickness. Thin asparagus cooks quickly, while thicker stalks need more time to become tender.
As perviously noted, you can add extra flavor with garlic powder, fresh garlic, parmesan cheese, or a squeeze of lemon juice. But I prefer it without.

How to Store Asparagus
To store asparagus before cooking, trim the ends and place the stalks upright in a glass of water with about an inch of water at the bottom. Loosely cover with a plastic bag and refrigerate. This is the best way to store asparagus and keep it fresh longer.
After cooking, store leftover asparagus in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.
Reheating Tips
Reheat leftover asparagus on a baking sheet in a 350°F oven until warmed through, or enjoy it at room temperature in salads or bowls.
Serving Ideas
This simple side dish pairs perfectly with roast chicken, steak, salmon, or eggs for brunch. It’s a versatile and healthy vegetable that works with so many meals and is a great addition to your collection of new recipes.
