Tallow Sunscreen Recipe (A Natural Alternative for Sun Protection)

I will be honest, switching to a mineral based tallow sunscreen was one of the last changes I made when I started choosing cleaner, more natural products. But the more I paid attention to ingredient lists and learned what was actually in conventional sunscreens, the more it just did not sit right with me to put those ingredients on myself, my husband, and my children. The biggest challenge I ran into was finding a sunscreen that was truly clean and still worked really well.

That is what led me to finally figuring out how to make a high quality and super clean sunscreen at home. I wanted something made with simple ingredients and that I felt good about using on my skin every day. As well as something that goes on smooth, and actually works.

I did SO much research before even developing my recipe to figure out the exact ingredients I would need to accomplish this. I researched some high end nontoxic tallow based sunscreen brands to figure out what ingredients were giving them success. And I believe I came up with the best recipe on the internet for homemade tallow based sunscreen. This recipe uses grass-fed tallow, nutrient-rich oils, and non-nano zinc oxide to create a natural sunscreen that forms a physical barrier and helps protect against everyday sun exposure while supporting overall skin health. The best part is it rubs on smooth and works really well!

Why Conventional Sunscreen Can Be Problematic

Most big sunscreen brands rely on chemical sunscreens filled with questionable ingredients. If you have ever looked closely at an ingredient list, you will likely see things like oxybenzone, avobenzone, and synthetic fragrances.

Hormone Disruptors and Synthetic Chemicals

Many conventional formulas contain synthetic chemicals that act as hormone disruptors, potentially interfering with your body’s endocrine system. According to the Environmental Working Group, some sunscreen ingredients are absorbed into the bloodstream after just one use.

Skin Irritation and Sensitive Skin Issues

If you have sensitive skin, these formulas can lead to irritation, redness, or even long term skin barrier damage. Synthetic additives and seed oils can disrupt your natural skin barrier, especially with daily use.

Environmental Impact

Certain sunscreen ingredients have been linked to damage to coral reefs and marine life, making them harmful not just to human skin but to the environment as well.

Lack of True Protection

Unlike mineral based zinc sunscreen, chemical formulas absorb into the skin rather than sitting on top. That means they do not provide the same physical protection or mineral barrier against UVB rays and other harmful rays.

Why Choose a Tallow-Based Sunscreen

This tallow sunscreen works with your skin instead of against it.

Nutrient-Rich and Skin-Loving

Grass-fed beef tallow is a nutrient-rich fat packed with fatty acids that closely resemble those found in human skin. It supports deep hydration, strengthens the skin barrier, and promotes a healthy glow.

Natural Sun Protection

The main active ingredient in this recipe is non-nano zinc oxide, which provides broad-spectrum UV protection by reflecting both UVA and UVB rays.

Clean and Simple Ingredients

Unlike conventional products, this recipe uses clean ingredients like jojoba oil, coconut oil, and organic beeswax with no synthetic additives or fillers.

Gentle Yet Effective

This natural product is ideal for all skin types, including dry areas and sensitive skin, offering effective sun protection without irritation.

Ingredient Benefits and Purpose

Each ingredient in this tallow sunscreen recipe plays an important role in creating a protective, nourishing, and effective product.

zinc oxide, beeswax pellets and other ingredients for tallow sunscreen

Grass-fed tallow

Grass-fed tallow or grass-fed beef tallow is the base of this recipe and provides deep hydration and natural nourishment. This nutrient-rich fat contains fatty acids that support the skin barrier and mimic the structure of human skin, helping improve overall skin health and lock in moisture

Jojoba oil or Olive oil

Jojoba oil is one of the best nutrient-rich oils for skincare because it closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum. It helps balance oil production and supports a healthy glow. Olive oil is another great option, rich in antioxidants and cold-pressed oils that nourish and protect the skin

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil adds additional moisture and helps improve the spreadability of the sunscreen. It also contributes to the protective barrier and works well for dry areas, though those with very sensitive skin may prefer to use a smaller amount

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride MCT oil

This lightweight oil derived from coconut oil improves texture and absorption without greasiness. It helps the sunscreen glide on smoothly and enhances the overall skin feel of the final product.

Mango Butter

Mango butter is a gentle, non-comedogenic butter that provides deep hydration and supports skin repair. It contributes to the creamy texture and adds to the nourishing qualities of this natural produc

Beeswax Pellets

Organic beeswax helps create a water resistant barrier on the skin, making this sunscreen more durable during water exposure or heavy activity. It also thickens the formula and reinforces the protective barrier.

Non-nano zinc oxide

Non-nano zinc oxide is the main active ingredient and is essential for effective sun protection. It sits on top of the skin and forms a mineral barrier that reflects UV rays, providing broad-spectrum UV protection including UVB protection. Because it is non-nano, the zinc oxide particles are not absorbed into the skin, making it a safer option.

Cocoa Powder

Cocoa powder helps reduce the strong white residue that is common with zinc sunscreen. While a slight white cast may remain, this ingredient helps make the product more wearable for daily use.

Optional Ingredients

Vitamin E adds antioxidant support and can help extend shelf life. Carrot seed oil and red raspberry seed oil are often included in natural sunscreen blends for their supportive role in sun protection. Pure essential oils can be added in a small amount for scent, but should always be used carefully, especially for sensitive skin. It’s important to also make sure that

Tallow Sunscreen Recipe

This recipe creates a smooth, spreadable zinc sunblock that offers a natural SPF equivalent estimated around SPF 20 to 30 depending on application.

It is true that this recipe uses more ingredients than some other homemade recipes that you can find online. But I would argue the result is far superior to other recipes based on these ingredients. I formulated this recipe off of a high end natural tallow based sunscreen that I used to pay top dollar for. I chose these ingredients specifically because I needed a zinc based sunscreen that wouldn’t make me look like a ghost every time I use it, and that went on evenly and smoothly. I think I accomplished what I set out to do. And I hope you love it as much as I do!

Ingredients

1/3 cup grass-fed tallow
1/4 cup jojoba oil (or liquid oil of choice)
1 tablespoon extra virgin coconut oil
1 tablespoon Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride MCT oil
2 tablespoons mango butter
1 tablespoon organic beeswax pellets
1/4 cup non-nano zinc oxide
1-2 teaspoon organic cocoa powder (use more for darker skin color)

Optional additions include vitamin E oil for added skin nourishment, carrot seed oil or red raspberry seed oil, and pure essential oils used in a small amount. if you add essential oils it is important to choose them carefully. Stick with gentle, non-photosensitizing options like lavender, chamomile, and frankincense, which support healthy skin without increasing sensitivity to UV rays.

Step By Step Instructions For How To Make Tallow Sunscreen

1. Melt the base ingredients

Set up a double boiler by placing a heat-safe glass bowl over a small saucepan with a few inches of water. Add the grass-fed beef tallow, mango butter, beeswax, and coconut oil to the bowl. Heat over medium-low, stirring occasionally, until everything is fully melted and combined. Avoid high heat to preserve the quality of the nutrient-rich oils.

2. Add liquid oils

Once melted, remove the bowl from heat. And allow it to cool down for about 10-15 minutes. It should be liquid but no longer hot. Then, stir in your liquid oil such as jojoba oil and MCT oil, as well as any optional ingredients such as vitamin E or carrot seed oil. Mix thoroughly with a whisk until the texture is smooth and fully combined. This step helps improve the spreadability and skin feel of your tallow sunscreen.

3. Add the non nano zinc oxide

Slowly add the non-nano zinc oxide to the mixture. Sprinkle it in gradually while stirring continuously to prevent clumping. It is best to do this in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling the powder. Stir until the zinc oxide is fully and evenly incorporated, ensuring consistent sun protection throughout the product.

4. Add the cocoa powder

Add the cocoa powder. Stir thoroughly until the mixture is smooth, with no visible clumps. This step helps reduce the white cast and enhances the final texture. If you have have darker skin I recommend adding at least 1 extra tsp of cocoa powder to get a slightly darker tint.

5. Allow to cool and then whip

Allow the mixture to cool (in the fridge for about 30 mins to 1 hour or on the counter for a couple of hours) until it begins to thicken but is not fully solid. When you poke it with your finger, your finger should leave an indent. Then, using a hand mixer, whip the mixture until light and fluffy. This creates a smoother, creamier texture that is easier to apply.

6. Pipe or spoon into jars

Transfer the mixture into glass jars or tins by piping or spooning it in while still soft. If you follow this recipe your sunscreen shouldn’t feel too soft or too firm. However, if your sunscreen feels too firm, you can remelt it and add a small amount of liquid oil. If it is too soft, remelt and add a bit more beeswax to help it set more firmly.

How to Use

Apply a small amount to exposed skin before sun exposure. Rub over the skin, but do not rub in fully until you can no longer see the white cast. Non nano zinc oxide is meant to sit on top of the skin to create a barrier from the sun. This specific formula creates a protective barrier on the skin and offers broad-spectrum protection.

Reapply after swimming or heavy activity. This sunscreen is best for moderate sun exposure rather than extended time in direct sunlight. A slight white cast may remain, though cocoa powder helps reduce the strong white residue.

Important Notes on SPF and Expectations

Because this is a homemade natural sunscreen, it does not have a lab-tested SPF rating. However, the amount of zinc oxide used typically provides an SPF equivalent in the 20 to 30 range.

At the end of the day, sunscreen should not be the only thing you rely on. It is best used alongside shade, protective clothing, and limiting peak sun hours.

The Difference Between Mineral Sunscreen vs Chemical Sunscreen

When choosing the right sunscreen, it’s important to understand the difference between mineral sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens, like this tallow sunscreen, use ingredients such as non-nano zinc oxide to sit on top of the skin and create a physical barrier that reflects UV rays. This provides broad-spectrum protection and is often better for sensitive skin.

Most sunscreens sold online or in stores are chemical sunscreens, which means they absorb into the skin and use synthetic chemicals to absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. While they are common in conventional products, they can be more irritating for some skin types and often contain ingredients that can be detrimental to your health.

For those looking for a more natural approach with clean ingredients, mineral sunscreens are often the preferred option.

FAQ

Does tallow sunscreen really work?

Yes, a properly formulated tallow sunscreen using non-nano zinc oxide can provide effective sun protection. Zinc oxide is widely used in mineral sunscreens because it creates a physical barrier that reflects UV rays. The effectiveness depends on how evenly and generously it is applied. It is also important to make sure you don’t fully rub it in, since non nano zinc oxide is meant to sit on top of the skin and act as a barrier.

What is the SPF of this tallow sunscreen recipe?

This recipe is estimated to have an SPF equivalent of around 20 to 30 based on the amount of zinc oxide used. However, because it is homemade, it does not have a verified SPF rating from lab testing.

Is tallow sunscreen safe for sensitive skin?

Tallow-based products are often very well tolerated because grass-fed beef tallow closely mimics human skin. Combined with clean ingredients and no synthetic additives, this recipe is a great option for sensitive skin. That said, people with highly sensitive skin can still react to certain ingredients in homemade tallow balm. So it is important to do a patch test with each ingredient before making this recipe if you have highly sensitive skin. The most important thing is to choose high quality ingredients, and especially high quality tallow.

Will this sunscreen leave a white cast?

Yes, because zinc oxide sits on top of the skin, it can leave a white cast. However, compared to pretty much any other recipe that I have made or that you could find online, this recipe is unique because it incorporates cocoa to cut down on some of the white cast. It also incorporates Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides which helps it rub in more smoothly. So while there will naturally be some white residue, it is not as white as most homemade recipes or zinc based sunscreens that I have tried. However, some level of white cast is normal with non nano zinc sunscreen since it is meant to sit on top of the skin to act as a barrier.

Is this sunscreen water resistant?

The addition of beeswax helps create a water resistant barrier, making it more durable during light water exposure or heavy activity. However, it should still be reapplied after swimming.

Can I use this sunscreen daily?

Yes, this natural sunscreen is gentle enough for daily use and can also help support overall skin health thanks to its nutrient-rich oils and natural nourishment.

How long does homemade tallow sunscreen last?

When stored in a cool, dry place in glass jars, this sunscreen typically lasts several months. Adding vitamin E can help extend shelf life.

Can I substitute different oils in the recipe?

Yes, you can customize this recipe using other cold-pressed oils depending on your skin type. Jojoba oil is ideal for most people, but olive oil or other nutrient-rich oils can also work well. I also opt for oils that are less comedogenic such as Jojoba. Some other great additions are Carrot Seed Oil and/or Vitamin E oil, but these would be in addition to the Jojoba Oil.

Can I add essential oils to my tallow sunscreen?

Yes, you can add essential oils, but it is important to choose them carefully. Stick with gentle, non-photosensitizing options like lavender, chamomile, and frankincense, which support healthy skin without increasing sensitivity to UV rays. Avoid citrus oils such as lemon, lime, and bergamot, as well as strong or irritating oils like peppermint and cinnamon, since they can increase the risk of sun damage or irritation. If you choose to include essential oils, use only a small amount to keep the formula safe and suitable for daily use.

Final Thoughts

Switching to a mineral tallow-based product is a simple way to reduce exposure to synthetic chemicals while supporting healthy skin. Whether it is your first time trying ancestral cosmetics or you already love tallow products, this recipe is a great product to add to your routine.

Made with high quality, nutrient-rich oils and a powerful mineral barrier, this tallow sunscreen recipe goes a long way in helping protect your skin naturally.

Store in a cool place, use within a few months, and enjoy a natural way to support your skin and reduce sun damage.
